Ohio Horsemen’s Council
The Ohio Horseman’s Council celebrated their 42nd anniversary in 2012. Our organization is an enthusiastic and dedicated group of horse people helping to keep trail riding and equine events available for the future generations of horse enthusiasts. We want there to be trails available for the up and coming generations of horse people who will carry on the dreams of our past generations of horsemen.
The Preble County Ohio Horseman's Council is very active within the Preble County, Ohio area. Preble County OHC has adopted the Hueston Woods State Park Horseman’s Campground and trails. There have been a lot of improvements made not only to the campground but also to the riding trails within the park. We have also created a new trail that is adjacent to the B Trail, along with improving the foundation of A Trail, B Trail, C Trail and D Trail. Our trails will accommodate the novice trail rider as well as challenge the experienced trail rider. You can venture out for a short one hour ride or you can ride for hours, it all depends on you and your horse. The trails are marked with white posts with the name of the trail and also there is a directional of the return to horse camp. If you haven’t been to Hueston Woods Horse Camp in a couple years we think you will be pleasantly surprised at the improvements we have made.
In the past two years our chapter has donated over 5000 volunteer hours to Hueston Woods State Park towards building and maintaining trails. We have added new tie rails to the overflow campsites, a new shower house and a second shelter house to the horse arena area. Hueston Woods is the only State Park in Ohio with a Riding Arena. Our arena can be rented for any of your upcoming events, if you are having a horse show, speed show or just a training show you can contact any of the board of officers or especially the president to find out what times or dates are available.
There are several new projects planned for 2015, in 2014 we added 4 new tie rails to sites #23 to #20, we also have added post guards around all of our water hydrants to help protect them from being run over. We also have plans in the works for a new playground for the younger family members, these plans are still in the early stages but we have high hopes that we can make this a reality in the next couple years. We are also working on improving the trail conditions on Trail C and Trail D, we have added a new rest area at the lookout point on Trail C, with picnic tables and tie rails for your horses. The view is beautiful of the lake and dam area, with shaded picnic area and tie rails for your horse it is a great place to take a break, eat some lunch or just take a few minutes to enjoy the view. Without the volunteers none of this would be possible they work hard to clear brush, trees, and maintenance on all horse trails within the park. Even with over 5000 volunteer hours we still find time to have fun. We have several camp-out weekends and horse shows planned for 2015 this also includes our State Ride that will be in October again this year. We do our best to help improve the community for the equine enthusiast, as well as for the general public. We participate in community events, such as service projects, parades, trail rides, and equine shows. We feel it is always important to give back to the community that has been so supportive of our organization.
